  • World Cup 2018 Group G preview: Intrigue for England, Belgium despite easy draw. Group G predictions. Ryan Bailey: Belgium (1), England (2).
  • Teams: Belgium, England, Tunisia, Panama It’s time for Belgium to live up to all of the accolades its squad receives and win past the semifinals of a tournament. Even if their troubles are more managerial than with players, there is no more room for excuses given the raw talent this team’s players have. Coach Roberto Martinez’ squad is chock-full of quality players including Manchester.

One of the most solid Groups in the World Cup is Group G, where Belgium and England are almost certainly going to capture the two top spots. With Tunisia and Panama the other two teams in the group, Belgium and England will fight against one another for the top spot. It is Belgium who is the favorites to win the group, England is second in the odds, while Panama is the heavy favorites to finish at the bottom.

BELGIUM (-120)

Belgium is coming into this tournament with all their big guns, as they have by far the best generation of players the country has produced. They steamrolled through their qualifying group (9-0-1), with only Greece holding them to a 1-1 draw in Belgium. Belgium scored a whopping 43 goals and conceded just six in the process. Romelu Lukaku was the leading scorer with 11 goals, while Eden Hazard (six goals, five assists), Dries Mertens (five goals, seven assists) and Thomas Meunier (five goals, seven assists) led the charge. Spanish coach Roberto Martinez has a lot of options for the starting line-up, and one of the deepest benches in the tournament. He also has former France star Thierry Henry as an assistant coach. They are expected to have an easy job in the first two matches against Panama and Tunisia, while the final game against England will shape the group.

ENGLAND (+120)

England is dubbed one of the 'losers' of world soccer, as they have always choked in major competitions. They did win the World Cup as hosts back in 1966, but with a very controversial goal. Since then, the Three Lions have failed to reach the final in the World Cup and also in the EURO Cup. They are led by coach Southgate, who led England to the World Cup by going undefeated in the qualifiers. England is led by Tottenham’s star-player Harry Kane, who is easily one of the best forwards in the world right now. The whole squad is pretty young, the 3rd youngest in the World Cup, with an average age of 25.9 years. However, the lack of experience might be a problem here, as England do have a limited ceiling in the competition. Maybe this generation of players can make a big bang in the next World Cup, where pretty much everyone will be at a ripe age and with a lot more experience.

TUNISIA (+2200)

Tunisia is competing in the World Cup for the fifth time in their history without having anything special to show, as they have been eliminated in the group stage three times. They are one of the most inexperienced teams in Africa, with just a single Copa Africa in their trophy room, back in 2004 when they were hosts. This time around they did a great job in the qualifiers (4-0-2), where they were up against Congo, Libya, and Guinea. They have a Tunisian coach who isn't very experienced, while most of their players are participating in domestic competitions and in France. Tunisia will heavily rely on Forward Wahbi Kazri, a very talented and promising player who had a pretty nice season with Rennes in France. Tunisia will almost certainly fight with Panama to avoid the last spot of the group.

PANAMA (+6600)

Panama has had quite an exciting journey in order to reach their first ever World Cup. It was in the final match of the qualifiers that they essentially secured their ticket when they scored a late goal to defeat Costa Rica by 1-2 at home. Their roster consists of players who play in the MLS, and their best players are goalkeeper Jaime Penedo, defenders Roman Torres (who scored the qualifying goal) and Felipe Baloy, midfielder Gabriel Gomez (their record man in caps with 142) and forwards Blas Perez and Luis Tejeda who are also very experienced. However, the roster is the oldest in the World Cup with an average age of 29.4. Moreover, they have the heaviest player in the tournament (Roman Torres), and also the shortest player (Alberto Quintero).

Belgium and England will most likely capture the top two spots in this group, as neither Tunisia nor Panama looks like they can cause upsets here. There is value in getting Belgium, England, Tunisia, and Panama to finish in this exact same order (+150), but this particular group seems predictable. Maybe Panama can grab a point in their match with Tunisia, so Panama to get exactly one point is at +175. Our best bet for this group is for Belgium to get Over 6.5 points in this group (-120), as they should be able to defeat Tunisia and Panama, and should at least hold England to a draw. Also, a wild bet on Harry Kane to be the top goal scorer in the tournament is at a massive +1600.

World cup 2018 group g predictions 2019

Will the football finally return home this year? England are not among the favourites to win the tournament, but they will certainly fancy themselves to book a place in the last-16.

The Three Lions will compete with formidable Belgium for the top spot in Group G. Tunisia and Panama are remaining nations in the group.

We take a look at four sides and their hopes of qualifying from Group G

Belgium

The Belgian squad is brimming with talent, but they have underperformed in recent tournaments. In 2014 Brazil, the Red Devils won all of their group games to top their group. In the last-16, they claimed an extra-time win over the United States but lost 1-0 to Argentina in quarterfinals.

Belgium were quite impressive in the qualifying campaign and won their group without losing a game. There are huge expectations on them this year, and any finish before semi-finals would be termed as a disappointment. The Belgium side has enough talent to go a long way in the tournament, but the question is whether head-coach Roberto Martinez can bring out the best of this group in a major tournament.

Belgium are favourites to win the group at 16/19 odds. They are very likely to qualify to the last-16 at 1/10 odds.

England

England embarrassingly bowed out in the group stage at Brazil 2014. They find themselves in a much easier group this time, and they shouldn’t face many difficulties in progressing into the last-16. However, the English side has been famously disappointing in recent tournaments, including their recent last-16 exit to Iceland in Euro2016.

The Three Lions were impressive in the qualifying campaign and topped their group without losing a game, as can be seen on soccer-blogger.com. Even with recent disappointments in tournaments, Gareth Southgate’s men will have the backing of their entire nation in Russia. The English side doesn’t lack in talent, and the likes of Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Raheem Sterling are capable of winning games on their own. The likes of Joe Hart and Wayne Rooney won’t be wearing the England jersey in this World Cup.

The Three Lions are available at 13/8 odds to win the group and at 1/6 odds to qualify.

Panama

Panama are making their first appearance at World Cup. It’s a huge occasion for the nation, but we expect them to concede a lot of goals against big boys. It was very close for the Central American nation in the qualifying campaign as they finished ahead of Honduras due to a better goal difference.

There are no famous names in the Panama squad as the majority of the team play in American leagues, including MLS. Panama are favourites to finish last in their group at 8/13 odds.

Tunisia

Tunisia have qualified for World Cup following a gap of eight years. Overall, they are making their fifth appearance in the football’s biggest tournament. However, they have never managed to make it past the group stage, and their only win in the tournament came in 1978. The Eagles of Carthage were given a tough challenge by DR Congo in their final qualifying group, but they managed to finish a point above their opponents.

The Tunisian side consists of some decent Ligue 1 players. Leicester City defender Yohan Benalouane is the only player in the squad who plays in one of big four European leagues.

The African nation are available at 11/2 odds to qualify and at 1/5 odds to crash out in the group stage.

Betting Tips

Belgium and England to qualify.
